The under structure conception respects the escalating requirements for increased terrainnegotiating speed. The excellent passive protection of the three-member crew is assured by the following factors: resistant combined armour, lateral shields against cumulative cartridges, low silhouette, installation of protective equipment against the pressure wave effects and the combat radioactive substances.T-72M1 inside space is divided up into three parts; drivers space, combat space and engine gear space. In addition to these above spaces, other operational devices and equipment are located on the outside part of the body and tower. The tank T-72M1 is tracked combat vehicle fitted with an efficient firing system and a reliable armoured protection and endowed with a height manoeuvring ability. Owing to its small dimensions and small combat weight, it ranks into the medium tank category featuring advantageous tactical and operational qualities such as lower railway and river crossing transport requirements, lower requirements to the bridge (including mobile ones) carrying capacities. The T72A low silhouette as compared to other contemporary tanks is a decisive factor of excellent passive protection. The tank crew comprises 3 men - tank commander, gunner and driver. In constructing it, the paramount attention was dedicated to armament.

The main weapon is a 125 mm smooth-barrelled double plane-stabilized cannon and the coupled 7.62 mm machine gun. The gun system is fitted with precise homing and range-finding devices as well as an automatic loader enabling a high rate of fire. The 12.7 mm NSV machine gun designed to deliver fire at air and ground targets constitutes a part of the anti-aircraft system. The powerful engine, compact epicyclical gear and quality undercarriage provide the vehicle with a height manoeuvring ability. The hydraulic control system along with the transmission and the adequate undercarriage construction provide the tank with a good manageability in heavy terrain and narrow passages.
