Algae, the fertilizer of the future

Algae and its derivatives improve soils and tone plants, increasing crop yields and quality, so as this practice spreads, the use of chemical inputs will be replaced by organic inputs. , thus promoting sustainable agriculture.

The use of seaweed as a fertilizer dates back to the 19th century, when coastal dwellers harvested the large brown seaweed that the tide washed away and brought it to their land.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a small industry based on drying and crushing algae developed, but it weakened with the advent of synthetic chemical fertilizers.

According to studies from a leading Chilean university, the link between algae and agriculture is vitally important. Studies indicate that when algae or its derivatives are applied to the soil, their enzymes cause or activate reversible catalytic enzymatic hydrolysis reactions, which the enzymes of the living things that inhabit them, including the roots, are not able to. perform in a notable manner.

Algae and their derivatives improve the soil and invigorate plants, increasing crop yields and quality, so as this practice spreads, the use of synthetic chemicals will be replaced by organic products, promoting thus sustainable agriculture. Algae have better properties than fertilizers because they release nitrogen more slowly, they are also rich in microelements and do not generate weed seeds.

Thanks to its high content of fiber, macro and micronutrients, amino acids, vitamins and plant phytohormones, algae act as a soil conditioner and contribute to moisture retention. In addition, due to their mineral content, they are a useful fertilizer and a source of trace elements.

Algae such as Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus serratus and Laminaria, are used in the cultivation of potatoes, artichokes, citrus fruits, orchids and grasses. Corallines, calcified red algae known as maƫrl, have a high carbonate content, and are used in addition to soil conditioners, to correct the pH in acidic soils.

Algae are also able to activate the immune system of crops, generating larger productions, of better quality and more resistant to disease and environmental stress.
