Long-Lost 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Roadster: One of 141 Produced

1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Roadster

This elegant 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Roadster is one of just 141 300S roadsters ever produced. Known as one of the most exclusive luxury automobiles of the early 1950s and representing the pinnacle of the Mercedes-Benz range. This particular example comes out of 35 year ownership and has never been publicly offered for sale during that time. Black with ivory interior, its extremely original and untouched besides the interior which was redone in vinyl many years ago. An honest car with straight body panels, good door fit, and solid undercarriage. The ideal original car to restore, this long-lost 300S Roadster is quite the exciting and special discovery!

Shortly after the debut of its exceptionally well-engineered 300-series sedan in 1951, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a sporting version, the 300S. This new variant bridged the gap between the four-door 300 and the much-anticipated upcoming 300 SL sports car; its chassis was shortened by 25 centimeters and mounted with an uprated 3.0-liter inline-six with a trio of Solex carburetors and boosted compression ratio, producing a healthy 150 horsepower. Three coachbuilt body styles were available: a coupe, a cabriolet with a traditional fully insulated soft-top, and a roadster, with a top that folded flush with the body when lowered for an extremely clean look. Exclusivity was assured, as the extremely costly 300S sold only 560 copies between 1952 and 1958, to an impressive roster of clients that included Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, and the Aga Khan. Today the model is still considered one of the finest European luxury cars of its era, and one of the last truly hand-made automobiles that carried the Classic Era traditions firmly into the modern age.
