Rare 1935 BMW 315/1 Roadster One of 242

This 1935 BMW 315/1 presents an unusual opportunity for the discerning collector to enjoy a rare and stylish pre-war BMW Roadster in fascinating, unrestored condition. While the earliest history of this BMW 315/1 Roadster is not known, by 1960 it had come into the ownership of Herb Tobin of Massachusetts. Mr. Tobin, an active member of the Vintage Sports Car Club of America and the American Bugatti Club, campaigned the Roadster in the Hunnewell Hill Climb in Wellesley, Massachusetts, among other events throughout the 1960s. Upon Mr. Tobin’s passing in 2017, his son Dan inherited the BMW, taking careful measures to make the Roadster roadworthy once again without disturbing its charming patina, following an extended period of storage.

Launched in April 1934 at the Berlin Motor Show, the BMW 315/1 Roadster Prototype was an instant success with motoring enthusiasts. Demand for this mid-sized roadster was strong enough for BMW to produce a limited run of just 242 units. This new model was based on the 315 saloon and powered by the same 1.5-liter, inline six-cylinder engine. Thanks to its lightweight bodywork, the 315 was capable of over 100 km/h in roadster form. Due to their impressive handling, largely a result of their independent front suspension, 315 Roadsters were campaigned in rallies and circuit races across Europe throughout the mid-1930s. The success of these sports cars paved the way for their successor – the legendary 328.
